MathCounts Competition Series

The MathCounts Competition Series is a national math competition for middle school students. Throughout the school year, students will advance through four levels of competition—school, chapter, state and national.

Registration Details:

  • Registered through the school (though there are single student registration options)
  • $35 per student for a maximum of 10 students per school
    • this fee covers each student from the Chapter to National competition with complimentary school competition kit 
  • Regular Registration Deadline: December

Test Structure and Dates:

  • School Competition (January) 
    • maximum of 10 per school students advance
  • Chapter Competition (February)
    • top 10 students advance (depends on chapter)
  • State Competition (March) 
    • top 4 students from each state advance
  • National Competition (May)

Each Competition consists of 4 rounds all free response

  • Sprint (30 problems in 40 min): focus on speed and accuracy
  • Target (8 problems in 30 min): focus on problem-solving and reasoning
  • Team (10 problems in 20 min): focus on problem-solving and collaboration
  • When there’s a tie in Sprint and Target, there’ll be an additional Countdown round
